Definition of human being

In class on Wednesday, you began discussing with your partner what it means to be human.  As a base line for our discussions this year, post a working definition of what it means to be human. A definition is both concise and precise. Post your definition as a comment to this post.  While I'll usually ask you to respond to others' posts, for this first post, simply share your ideas with the class.  This is due by 8AM on Friday.

  2. To be human, I believe, means to be able to feel anything, whether it's physically or emotionally or even mentally. To be human is to have your own feelings towards certain things, to have the capability to come up with your own opinions. Being human, ironically, does not mean living up to the standards of why human beings are created, for to be human means making mistakes and hopefully learning from them as you go along living your life. Being human means having a mind of your own and making decisions that are able to change your life and the life of those around you - and also to face the consequences, negative and positive, of those decisions. To be human is to naturally want to live for something you truly believe in. Being human means to be curious and seek out love and the meaning of life. To be human is to appreciate the simplest of things and everything you have been given. To be human is to live life the way you want to live it and live up to your greatest potential.

  4. My definition to be human is that all people should be treated with respect, that includes yourself. Being human means that you should try to live your own life to the fullest. With so much technology and new ideas popping up all over the world, this really begins to change who the human being really is.

  5. To me, being human means not only the ability to feel and to breathe, but also to express emotion, learn, and have feelings. Another part of being human is to be able to express your own ideas and display individuality. A key aspect to being human is making errors as well. No human beings are perfect, so an important part to being human is to not be perfect.

  6. The most basic definition of a human is a living homosapien. However, being alive and having a human-like appearance do not make one a human. After all, zombies share the same qualities. Humanity is marked by a single quality that separates it from all other living things. Human beings pursue happiness. What this means is that while other living things like animals may be consumed by the need to survive, humans have hope and ambition to move up in the world and live each day better than the last. While other living things are methodical and follow their instincts or a set of rules carved into their minds(or whatever plants have) humans can be irrational and follow their hearts. Although these emotional qualities and dreams are only the surface of what it means to be human, they are important distinctions that separate the humans from the zombies.

  8. Being human is feeling emotions through out your life. Also apart of being human is facing adversity in your life and reacting to it. Being human is also about being free and making your own decisions that have an impact on you and your people around you.

  9. To be human means to have and express emotion as well as to be appreciative of creation. These things are sewn within us from conception and are contained in us throughout our lives as humans. Recently DNA was discovered; in the beginning scientists did not know the power this has over the development of a human, both physically and mentally. In today’s world however, DNA is able to change the way humans think, act, and look before they are actually born. This can eventually change the common definition of being human by altering the core which determines us being truly human, our DNA.

  10. Technically, a human being is a physical body that survives off of oxygen to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat. In order to live, you must feel every emotion possible and learn as you grow old, but really, to be human is to be you. You are your own human being and you create your own "definition" according to your life and how you live it.

  14. Being human means showing your emotions and knowledge. This is what separates us from animals. Human beings are capable of showing love, hate, sadness, and many other types of emotions and can express them in many different ways compared to animals. Also, humans have the knowledge to advance and create a better society in which every living and non-living thing can benefit from.

  15. Being human is complex, we are complex. Nowadays, being "human" is simply a label, not good nor bad. Humans are constantly judged and perceived by their actions, race, and views -causing the feeling(s) of feeling inhuman. However, I believe that as long as you are alive and breathing, you are human. All have their rights and thoughts reserved and valued equally because we are all the same.

A human being has the free will to choose a certain path in life, and the responsibility to deal with all that comes with each decision. We have the ability to create, grow, and love. However, in all honesty, humans acheive some of the most unbelievable things, and therefore can not be easily defined.

  17. To be human is being able to feel, whether it be physically or emotionally. To add to that, all of us make mistakes. What makes us human is our imperfections. We are created by the image and likeness of God,therefore human beings are meant to be good to one another and the environment and society around us.

  18. Humans can and do go against the theory of survival of the fittest. Their first priority is not surviving and passing on their genes. No, humans have evolved such that their emotional wellbeing matters. Humans can also think about theoretical concepts that don’t exist in the physical world, such as time, imaginary numbers, and the future.

  21. I believe that being human means to feel, basically everything. Human beings are unique from other creatures, because unlike others, we have the ability to think, act, create, and make a difference in the world. Being human means having the opportunity to shape your world, within your own mind. To be human means we have the right and privilege to make use of our true potential for the good of the world. We were given a physical being by God, so that we would be able to share our thoughts, emotions, feelings, perspectives, and views with each other. We were given life for many reasons we cannot decipher. But that is what being human truly means - to find our destiny in life and make it happen, not only for ourselves, but for the betterment of mankind.
